About the event
With the release of her self titled EP, Kelly Ann brings a new feel to the classic folk genre. Lush with an edgy but soulful vocal approach, addicting progressions, and persistent pop undertones, the record boasts the aesthetic of Indie Folk anthems. Although the songs are diverse from one another, there is a glue that holds them all together much like a concept album would. Most importantly, the album never loses sight of the emotional platform great songs are built from.
The first single, “Whimsy”, is an instant acoustic singer songwriter classic. Complete with a groove that builds, a catchy chorus, and loads of vocal hooks, the song seems to breathe as it plays on.
"'Whimsy' is celebrating the people in your life that you care about. It was born from the dictionary definition of my favorite word, "whimsical," a thesaurus and hard times. There is no better way to get through tough times than sitting around talking and laughing and sharing stories with people you love," explains the songwriter.
Although the single does speak volumes for the EP, to get a real understanding for where Kelly Ann is coming from, it should be heard in its entirety.
"I don't like trying to fit into a box. I spent years experimenting with my vocal abilities and songwriting, but this EP marks the moment I found my groove, so to speak. A fan had called it "soul folk," and, in that one moment, everything changed. I was put into a category that actually fit. It gave me the freedom to mix things up and made writing the EP so much easier," says Kelly Ann.
Having a love for music from a very young age, Kelly Ann was singing almost before she learned to talk. Performing in choirs from the age of 10 and all through her time at Visible Music College in Memphis TN, her passion for singing only grew. However, by the time she relocated back to California, Kelly Ann had sold her guitar and given up. When her best friend's mom heard this fact, she immediately lent Kelly Ann a guitar until she saved up to buy a new one. In 2011, she auditioned to play at a wine tasting room in Graeagle CA and was given a residency there, performing every Friday. Expanding her shows to venues in Reno, Grass Valley, and Auburn, and opening up for acts like The Marshall Tucker Band, Kelly Ann played until it was time to record her EP. After performing a cross country tour to Memphis, she was able to lay it all down. It was then the self titled “Kelly Ann” EP was finally born. The artist is now working on her upcoming full length follow up album.
The “Kelly Ann” EP is now available for streaming and downloads on most major digital outlets and the songwriter is currently working on new material for her upcoming release.
